GUSTAVE COURBET (1819-1877) – Leading figure of authenticity, and a reasonable point of reference for the impressionists, Courbet was one of the best progressives, both as a craftsman and as a social-dissident, of the historical backdrop of painting. Like Rembrandt and different antecedents, Courbet did not look to make magnificence, however accepted that excellence is attained to when and craftsman speaks to the purest reality without ingenuity.
